Most of the luxury homes we walk into have networking problems. The cause is almost always a consumer router doing work that a commercial-grade access point platform should be doing. The fix is one of two systems we deploy regularly: Ubiquiti UniFi or Ruckus. Both are excellent. The honest answer to which one belongs in your house is that it depends on the property.
We are a Ubiquiti UISP Pro Partner. We deploy Ruckus on properties where its specific strengths matter. This is how we choose between them.
Ubiquiti UniFi
UniFi is the platform that has changed luxury residential networking over the past decade. The access points are high-performance, the management software is mature, and the price point allows for proper coverage on a property without the budget driving design compromises. We specify UniFi on most Bergen County, Greenwich, and Hamptons builds because the performance-per-dollar is unmatched and the platform supports the management model that integrators need.
UniFi handles complex network topologies cleanly. Multiple VLANs for guest, IoT, AV, security, and primary devices. Wired backhaul to every access point with PoE switching. Outdoor APs rated for the New Jersey weather. Cloud management for remote monitoring. The system holds up.
Ruckus
Ruckus is the call when the property has dense usage patterns, large guest events, or commercial-grade demand that exceeds what consumer-tier hardware was designed for. Their access points use BeamFlex adaptive antenna technology that handles client density better than most competing systems. On a property that hosts regular fundraisers, a hospitality property, or a residence with twenty-plus simultaneous devices in a single room, Ruckus often delivers a more consistent experience than UniFi.
The trade-off is cost and management complexity. Ruckus hardware is more expensive per access point. The management platform is enterprise-grade and assumes a network administrator. For homes that fit the use case, the cost is justified. For homes that do not, UniFi is the better fit.

How we choose on a specific property
Three questions. First, how many simultaneous devices does the family run, and what is the maximum concurrent client count during a typical event. A home that runs eighty devices on a quiet day and three hundred during a holiday gathering has a different requirement than a home that runs forty devices at any time.
Second, what is the coverage footprint. A 25,000 square foot home with outdoor coverage to the pool house, the gate, and the carriage house needs access point counts and placement that the proposal should specify by room, not by square footage estimate. We model coverage during design, not after installation.
Third, what is the management model. Is there an integrator on retainer who will monitor and maintain the system, or is the owner expected to manage it. UniFi cloud management with our remote monitoring works for most owners. Ruckus typically assumes a managed services contract.
What both share
Wired backhaul to every access point. Proper enclosures and ventilation for the network rack. Sized PoE switching that does not run hot. Surge protection on the WAN feed. UPS on the core gear so a brief outage does not require a reboot. These are not Ubiquiti or Ruckus questions. They are the underlying engineering that determines whether the network is reliable.
What we will not deploy
Consumer mesh systems on a luxury home. Wireless backhaul between access points when wired backhaul is possible. Access points placed by guesswork rather than by survey. These show up on properties we are called to fix, and the fix is always the same: rebuild the foundation.
