A home automation system is only as reliable as the network it runs on. Crestron control, Lutron feedback, streaming audio distribution, IP cameras, intercoms, door access. every one of these systems relies on the network for communication. Consumer networking equipment is designed for a household that streams video and browses the web. It is not designed for a 12,000 square foot home with 200 connected devices, a Crestron control system, four access points, and a dedicated VLAN for security infrastructure. That is a different requirement, and it needs a different solution.
Why UniFi
Ubiquiti’s UniFi platform is the standard specification for enterprise-grade networking at a price point that does not require a corporate IT budget. The UniFi U6 Long-Range and U6 Pro access points. which anchor most of our residential installations. support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), handle dense client environments without throughput degradation, and provide the per-client visibility that allows us to diagnose issues remotely without a site visit.
The management software, UniFi Network, runs on a local controller (UniFi Dream Machine Pro in most installations) or in Ubiquiti’s cloud. From a single dashboard, we can see every connected device, every access point’s client count and signal strength, and every network segment. When a client calls with a connectivity complaint, we can usually identify the problem. a rogue device causing broadcast storms, an access point in an overloaded channel, a switch port showing degraded throughput. before we arrive on-site.
VLAN Architecture in Luxury Residences
Large luxury residences have network segmentation requirements that consumer equipment cannot handle. A properly designed residential network for a high-end home separates traffic by function: AV control on one VLAN, IP cameras on another, guest Wi-Fi isolated from the primary network, IoT devices that have internet access but no visibility of other local devices, and the primary client network sitting above all of it. UniFi’s switch and firewall lineup supports this architecture natively. The USW-Pro-24-PoE and USW-Enterprise series switches handle 802.1Q VLAN tagging, PoE budget management for cameras and access points, and link aggregation for the high-throughput runs that media servers and NAS storage require. The UDM-Pro gateway handles firewall rules, inter-VLAN routing, and the IDS/IPS inspection that protects a home network from threats that consumer routers ignore entirely.

Outdoor Coverage and Coverage Design
Large residential properties with outdoor entertaining areas, detached garages, pool houses, and guesthouses require outdoor access point coverage that is designed rather than guessed. UniFi’s U6 Mesh and FlexHD outdoor-rated access points extend coverage to areas that interior access points cannot reach, and they integrate into the same management platform as every indoor device. Outdoor coverage is specified using Ubiquiti’s site survey tools alongside our own walkthrough process, which means coverage is verified against actual client usage patterns rather than theoretical RF propagation estimates. The Alternative Conversation
Clients occasionally arrive with a familiarity with consumer mesh systems. Eero, Orbi, or Google Wifi. These are good consumer products. They are also not designed for the density, the segmentation requirements, or the management visibility that a complex residential AV installation demands. The management interface for a consumer mesh system shows you whether devices are connected. UniFi shows you which access point they are connected to, on what channel, at what signal strength, what their throughput history looks like, and whether anything about their behavior is anomalous. That visibility is how problems get solved before clients notice them.
