Distributed audio in a luxury interior should be heard, not seen. and certainly not dominate the ceiling plane. This course covers the full spectrum of architectural audio approaches, from traditional in-ceiling speakers to on-wall architectural panels, plaster-over drivers, and invisible audio transducers embedded in surfaces. Attendees develop the design judgment to match the right audio approach to the ceiling type, room use, and finish intent, and they leave understanding what rough-in decisions must be locked before drywall.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Compare in-ceiling, on-wall, plaster-over, and invisible audio technologies and identify appropriate applications for each in a luxury residential or hospitality interior.
- Describe the design constraints. ceiling height, material, HVAC layout, and beam placement. that affect speaker placement and performance.
- Specify paint, plaster, and finish requirements for speakers and grilles that are intended to disappear into the ceiling or wall plane.
- Identify the rough-in decisions. box location, backing board, conduit stub-out. that must be made before drywall to avoid remediation.
60-Minute Outline
A speaker that is 3 inches off its intended location because the rough-in was placed without reference to the ceiling coffer pattern is a visible problem. one the designer and owner will notice every day. Finish-painted grilles that are primed but not top-coated, or plaster-over speakers that receive the wrong compound, produce callbacks that no one budgeted for.
