Quick Answer: The mistakes we see are almost always the same ones, in the same order. People treat power protection as a $80 box from a big-box store, then wonder why their $40K AV system gets flaky. Here are 20 specific things to avoid. the ones that cost real money when you skip them.

We have been pulled into too many homes over the last year where every piece of equipment in the rack was chosen carefully and the power feeding it was an afterthought. The owner buys a $40K AV system and protects it with a $90 UPS. Then the gear acts up, gets blamed, gets replaced, and the cycle repeats because the actual problem. the wall. was never addressed.

This is the field guide to what NOT to do. Twenty mistakes, in order of how often we see them.

1. Do not skip a UPS because you have a generator

The generator solves long outages. The UPS solves the 5-30 second transfer gap and conditions incoming utility power when the grid is on. A generator without a UPS still leaves your gear vulnerable to brownouts, transient spikes, and harmonic distortion every single day. Different problems, different tools.

2. Do not use a consumer-grade UPS for a rack

The $80-$200 UPS from a big-box store is line-interactive at best, has a small battery, and outputs a stepped approximation of a sine wave that some power supplies hate. For a rack with automation, network, security, and AV equipment, you want an online double-conversion UPS, true sine wave output, with sufficient runtime and remote monitoring. The right UPS is $1,500-$5,000 at the rack level. It is not optional on a luxury install.

3. Do not plug a UPS into a power strip

And do not plug a power strip into a UPS. Both defeat the protection circuitry and create code violations. UPS plugs directly into a dedicated wall outlet. Loads plug directly into the UPS or into a rack-mount sequenced power conditioner downstream of the UPS.

4. Do not daisy-chain UPS units

People sometimes try to extend runtime by plugging one UPS into another. This causes phase, frequency, and waveform mismatches, defeats the protection of both units, and can damage downstream equipment. If you need more runtime, get a UPS with extended battery packs from the same manufacturer.

5. Do not size the UPS based only on wattage

Sizing requires three numbers: load (watts and VA), runtime requirement, and inrush tolerance. Pick a UPS rated for at least 1.3x your steady-state load to handle inrush and headroom. For runtime, calculate the actual minutes you need at full load, not the optimistic vendor number at 50 percent load. Underestimating either is the most common reason a UPS fails the moment it is needed.

6. Do not put the UPS on a hot AV closet floor

Heat is the enemy of every battery. A UPS sitting on the carpet inside a closed AV closet at 90F will lose half its expected battery life. Mount the UPS in the rack with proper airflow, ventilate the closet, and monitor closet temperature. We routinely see UPS batteries that should have lasted 5 years die in 18 months because the closet ran hot.

7. Do not skip ground bonding

A surge protector or UPS without a low-impedance path to ground does almost nothing. We measure ground at every install. If the ground rod is corroded, the bond is loose, or the panel ground is shared with a noisy circuit, surge protection becomes theatrical. Fix the ground first.

8. Do not protect only the rack and ignore the panel

Whole-home surge protection at the main panel catches the big stuff before it ever enters the house. Rack-level surge protection is the second line of defense. Doing only one and not the other leaves a hole. The whole-home unit is a few hundred dollars at install and protects every receptacle in the house.

9. Do not assume new construction has clean power

New does not mean clean. We have measured wildly out-of-spec voltage and significant harmonic distortion in homes that were built last year, often because of how the house was wired (shared neutrals, undersized feeders) or because of the load profile (LED drivers, EV chargers, inverter HVAC). Always measure before you spec.

10. Do not forget about the modem and ONT

The fiber ONT, the cable modem, and the inbound ISP equipment need their own UPS if you want internet during an outage. Plenty of homes have a great rack UPS keeping the router alive, but the ISP gear in the basement is not on backup, so the network is up internally and the WAN is dead.

11. Do not ignore the HVAC condensate pump

This is an unusual one but real. If your HVAC condensate pump shares a circuit with sensitive electronics, every time it cycles you get a small voltage transient. Same with sump pumps, well pumps, garage door openers, and old refrigerators. Map the inrush loads on your panel and isolate them onto their own circuits.

12. Do not skip surge protection on coax and Ethernet

Surges enter the house through every conductive path, not just power. Coax from the cable provider, Ethernet from outdoor cameras, satellite cables, and antenna feeds all need surge suppression bonded to the same ground as the panel. We have replaced more switches taken out by lightning through PoE camera runs than from power-side events.

13. Do not run a UPS at 100 percent capacity

Run at 60-75 percent of nameplate capacity. UPS efficiency, runtime, and battery longevity all degrade as the load approaches the maximum. Running at 95 percent “to save money” means the UPS has zero headroom for a power-on inrush event and you will trip the UPS itself, defeating the point.

14. Do not forget to test the UPS

A UPS that has never been tested is a UPS that you assume works. Run a self-test monthly. Run a full battery rundown test annually under load. Most rack-grade UPS units do this automatically and report by email. If yours does not, schedule it. The day the grid drops is the wrong day to find out the battery is gone.

15. Do not buy the cheapest replacement battery

UPS replacement batteries are commodity items with widely varying quality. The $40 generic from an online seller might have half the actual capacity of the OEM unit. We use OEM or tier-1 replacements, and we replace based on age, not on failure.

16. Do not put the generator and the UPS on different transfer logic

If your automatic transfer switch (ATS) and your UPS are not coordinated, the UPS can drain trying to ride out a transfer that the generator could have caught. Or the UPS can fight the generator’s output during the handoff. Generator, ATS, and UPS need to be specified together as one system, with documented sequence of operations.

17. Do not skip remote monitoring

A UPS that fails silently is worse than no UPS at all because you assumed protection that was not there. Every rack UPS we deploy reports battery health, runtime, load, input voltage, and event log to the automation system or to a monitoring service. The owner gets an alert before the battery degrades to failure, not after.

18. Do not ignore generator fuel

This is not a UPS mistake but it ends the same way. We have seen multi-day outages where the home had a great generator and a great UPS stack, but the propane tank was at 12 percent because nobody checked. Fuel level should be on the same monitoring dashboard as everything else. Natural gas is its own category and is usually fine, but propane and diesel must be tracked.

19. Do not let the EV charger and the home share an unmanaged panel

A 48-amp EV charger on a marginal feeder will sag voltage on the rest of the house every time the car charges. If you are seeing flicker, audio noise, or rebooting gear that correlates with EV charging sessions, you have a load management problem and possibly a service-size problem. Smart EV chargers and a load calculation are the fix.

20. Do not treat power as the cheapest line item

The single most common pattern we see: every other line item gets careful spec, and power gets the leftover budget. That is backwards. Every piece of gear in the house lives or dies based on what is at the receptacle. Treat the power infrastructure as the foundation, because it is. Bad foundation, bad outcomes, every time.

The fix is straightforward: measure what is at the wall, design a layered protection strategy (surge at the panel, conditioning where needed, online UPS at the rack, sequenced power for AV, monitoring for everything), and put it on a maintenance schedule.
