Quick Answer: Home power-management is a stack, not a product. At the panel: whole-home surge plus voltage regulation. At the rack: SurgeX-style non-sacrificial conditioning plus an online double-conversion UPS on LFP batteries. Picking power gear by brand is the wrong question. The right question is: what failure mode am I protecting against, at what scale, for how long? Once that is clear, the products almost pick themselves. This post walks through the four families of home power-management systems we deploy. RoseWater, SurgeX, APC (and Eaton/Tripp Lite as alternates), and the underlying battery chemistries. and explains where each fits.
The Three Tiers of Home Power Protection
Before brand names, understand the architecture:

- Tier 3. Whole-home consistent. A platform like RoseWater HUB20 that puts the entire house behind a 20 kVA inverter with a 28.8 kWh battery and integrates solar and generator. Cost: $80,000-$200,000+ installed depending on solar/generator scope.
Most luxury homes need Tier 1 plus Tier 2. The right ones for the right owners need all three.
Battery Chemistry: SLA vs. LFP
Every battery-backed system runs on one of two chemistries today, and the choice has real consequences.
Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA / VRLA): The legacy standard. Cheap up front. Roughly 3-5 year lifespan in a typical UPS application. Heavy. a 5 kVA UPS battery pack can weigh 200+ pounds. Sensitive to heat (every 18F above 77F roughly halves expected life). Capacity degrades silently. Still appropriate for short-runtime, cost-sensitive deployments and where weight is not a constraint.
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP / LiFePO4): The modern standard for serious power-management. 7-10 year lifespan in a typical UPS application. Roughly one-third the weight per kWh of SLA. Tolerates heat much better (still degrades, but the curve is gentler). Built-in battery management system reports state of health continuously. Higher up-front cost, lower total cost over the life of the system. Used in virtually every modern whole-home power platform. RoseWater HUB20 is LFP-only. and is now the default option in the higher-end rack UPS lines from APC, Eaton, and Vertiv.
Other chemistries (NMC lithium, lead-carbon, sodium-ion, flow batteries) exist but are not common in residential power-management today. LFP is the right answer for nearly every new install.
RoseWater Energy. HUB20 and the SB20
RoseWater Energy is the gold standard in whole-home power management for ultra-luxury residences. The flagship HUB20 is a 20 kVA online double-conversion inverter paired with a 28.8 kWh LFP battery. The SB20 is the smaller-footprint variant. The system sits between the utility service and the home’s main panel: every electron in the house passes through the inverter, which means the house always sees a perfect 120/240V sine wave regardless of what the utility is doing.
What it does well:
- Zero transfer time. When the grid drops, there is no transfer event. The inverter is already running the house from the battery; the utility is simply charging it. Lights do not flicker, electronics do not reboot, the AV system does not blink.
- Continuous power conditioning. Voltage sag, voltage swell, harmonic distortion, frequency drift. the inverter strips all of it. The house gets utility-grade clean power 100 percent of the time.
- Solar and generator integration. RoseWater is designed to work with rooftop solar and a standby generator as a coordinated stack. Solar charges the battery during the day; generator extends runtime during long outages; battery covers the gaps.
- Whole-home scope. Every circuit in the house is protected, not just the rack.
Tradeoffs: Cost. A RoseWater install with battery and inverter alone is well into six figures, and adding solar and generator integration pushes it higher. It also requires real electrical work. this is not a plug-in product. Maintenance is light but ongoing. The system needs a dedicated mechanical room (RoseWater publishes thermal and ventilation requirements that have to be designed in). For the right house, it is the only product that delivers reliable whole-home backup with utility-quality power conditioning baked in.
When to use it: A specific, narrow profile. New construction or substantial renovation on a $10M+ home where six figures on power is a rounding error. Houses with substantial wellness and food-storage infrastructure where a 30-second blink costs real money. large refrigeration, wine rooms with rare bottles, hyperbaric chambers in active use, induction kitchens. Properties at the end of a long utility feeder where the grid is genuinely bad and continuous conditioning has measurable benefit. Owners who have explicitly said they never want to see a flicker.
Who should NOT buy RoseWater: Most luxury homes. The honest math: you are spending $80K-$200K to protect against events that, for most properties, happen a few times a year and last under an hour. A properly specced rack UPS plus a generator handles 99 percent of those events for under $20K total. If none of the four conditions above apply to the home, the money is better spent on a larger generator, better rack UPS with LFP, and SurgeX at the panel and rack. We have walked owners off RoseWater more times than we have walked them onto it. It is not aspirational; it is situational.
SurgeX. SX-1115-RT, SX-1120-RT, XR-315
SurgeX is a category leader in surge protection and power conditioning specifically because of one engineering decision: Advanced Series Mode protection that is non-sacrificial. Almost every other surge protector on the market. Tripp Lite, Furman at the consumer tier, generic strip protectors. uses MOVs (metal oxide varistors). MOVs work by dumping surge current to ground; they wear out a little with every surge they absorb; eventually they fail open and the protector becomes a regular power strip with no protection. The user has no idea.
SurgeX uses an inductor-capacitor series-mode circuit that absorbs and dissipates surge energy without wearing out. The published spec is that SurgeX will not let through more than 6,000V at the load even on a worst-case lightning-induced surge, and the unit will perform identically after 1,000 events as it did on day one. We have SurgeX units in the field in luxury homes and commercial installs going on 15+ years that are still passing their annual test.
Common units we deploy:
- SX-1115-RT / SX-1120-RT. Rack-mount Advanced Series Mode protection at 15A and 20A respectively. The workhorses of the rack tier. We pair these with a UPS upstream for runtime, and the SurgeX provides the conditioning and surge protection downstream of the UPS.
- XR-315. Higher-current panel-adjacent unit for whole-home protection at the service entrance.
Tradeoffs: SurgeX is conditioning, not battery backup. The unit will not run the load through an outage; it just makes sure that whatever power is reaching the load is clean and that no surge passes through. It needs to be paired with a UPS for outage runtime. Pricing is higher than consumer-grade surge protection, justified by the non-sacrificial design and the engineering pedigree.
When to use it: Every rack we build. Every panel that does not have a comparable whole-home unit. Any installation where the owner asked us to spec the best surge protection available.
APC by Schneider Electric. Smart-UPS, NetShelter, Back-UPS
APC is the volume leader in rack and desk UPS gear. The product line is broad and the right model depends entirely on the use case.
- Back-UPS (BR series, BX series). Consumer-grade line-interactive UPS units in the $100-$300 range. Appropriate for desk PCs, modems, single-receptacle protection. Stepped-approximation sine wave output. Not for racks. Not for sensitive AV gear.
- Smart-UPS (SMC, SMT, SMX, SRT series). Professional-grade line-interactive (SMC, SMT) and online double-conversion (SRT) UPS units in the $500-$8,000 range. True sine wave output on the SMT line and up. The SRT (online double-conversion) line is what we deploy at the rack tier when SurgeX-plus-UPS is the architecture and the budget does not justify a RoseWater Tier 3. SRT models are available in LFP battery configurations now, which roughly doubles expected battery life and meaningfully reduces total cost of ownership.
- NetShelter. APC’s rack enclosure line. Not a UPS. it is the cabinet the UPS lives in. with integrated cable management, cooling options, and metered PDUs. We use NetShelter cabinets on most commercial racks and many residential racks where we want a sealed, ventilated enclosure.
Tradeoffs: APC quality is highly variable across the product line. Back-UPS at the bottom is consumer-grade and we do not deploy it on critical loads. Smart-UPS SRT at the top is genuinely excellent. The brand reputation reflects the volume product, which is why some integrators avoid it; the right answer is to spec the right model in the line, not avoid the brand.
When to use it: Smart-UPS SRT with LFP at any rack where SurgeX provides the conditioning and the UPS provides the runtime. Smart-UPS SMT for secondary racks and larger desk loads. Back-UPS for individual desk PCs only.
Eaton and Tripp Lite. The Alternates
Eaton (5P, 9PX, 9SX series) and Tripp Lite (now part of Eaton, SmartOnline series) are the credible alternates to APC at the rack tier. The 9PX and SmartOnline 1500-3000 VA are direct competitors to APC Smart-UPS SRT. online double-conversion, true sine wave, available in LFP. We have deployed both. The choice is usually driven by what the local distributor stocks, what is on a maintenance contract, and what fits the rack space. Engineering is comparable across the three brands at this tier.
Vertiv (formerly Liebert) is another credible option, particularly for higher-VA installs where 5kVA+ is needed. Vertiv leans more enterprise/data-center than residential, but the residential line (Liebert PSI5 and GXT) is a fit for very large home racks.
The honest take: at the rack tier, the brand matters less than the topology. Pick online double-conversion, pick LFP, pick a unit rated 1.3x to 1.5x the steady-state load, and the specific brand is a tiebreaker.
Putting It Together: A Real Luxury Home Stack
Here is a representative power-management stack we deploy on a $4M-$8M new construction or major renovation in our service area:
- At the meter / panel: Whole-home surge protection (SurgeX XR-315 or equivalent). Voltage regulator if utility is known dirty. Standby generator (Generac, Kohler, or equivalent, 22-48 kW, natural gas if available). Automatic transfer switch (Generac RXSW, Kohler, or matching utility).
- At the AV / IT rack: APC Smart-UPS SRT 2200 or SRT 3000 with LFP battery (60-90 minutes runtime). SurgeX SX-1115-RT or SX-1120-RT for rack-level conditioning. Sequenced rack PDU (Furman or equivalent) for ordered power-up.
- At critical sub-panels: Smaller Smart-UPS or Eaton 9SX on network closets, security panel, automation processor cabinet.
- For the highest tier: Add a RoseWater HUB20 between utility and main panel for whole-home clean backup, integrated with the existing solar and generator stack.
- Monitoring: All UPS units exposed via Ethernet or SNMP, integrated into the home automation system or a third-party monitoring service. Alerts on battery health, runtime, load, input voltage, ambient temperature.
This is not a price list. The cost varies enormously based on which tier the home needs and what the integration scope is. For most luxury homes Tier 1 plus Tier 2 is the right answer at $8K-$20K depending on rack count. For the highest-end and the most demanding owners, Tier 3 with RoseWater is the answer at $100K and up.
Local UPS vs. Whole-Home: How To Choose
This is the practical decision most owners are actually trying to make. Here is the matrix we walk through with every client:

Local rack UPS without whole-home protection leaves the rest of the house exposed. the kitchen refrigeration, the wine cellar, the lighting, the modem nobody put on backup. Whole-home without rack UPS still works fine because RoseWater is already double-conversion at the service entrance. but pairing them gives you a second isolation layer for the most sensitive AV/IT gear and lets the rack ride out RoseWater service events. The two layers solve different problems and pair well together when the budget supports both.
The most common mistake is the opposite of overspending. It is treating power as a leftover-budget item on a project where every other line item got careful spec. Tier 1 + Tier 2 done right is the foundation. Tier 3 is the upgrade for a specific buyer with a specific need.
