UniFi Protect runs on Ubiquiti hardware exclusively. Cameras, NVRs, and the UniFi Network Video Server (UNVS) are all Ubiquiti products. The upside is a tightly integrated hardware stack where firmware, software, and hardware are tested together. The downside is that you cannot mix in third-party ONVIF cameras and expect full feature support. If a specific lens angle or housing type exists only outside the Ubiquiti catalog, you have a gap. Luma, distributed by SnapAV, supports both its own camera hardware and third-party ONVIF cameras on its NVR platform. AI analytics is where the platforms diverge most significantly, and it is the most important technical dimension for a security director or a client who wants their system to do more than record.

UniFi Protect AI: On-premises person, vehicle, animal, and license plate detection. Works without internet. No per-camera AI fee. Best for estates that want event-based alerts without cloud dependency.
Verkada AI: Cross-camera person re-identification, license plate search across historical footage, crowd density analytics, behavioral analytics (loitering, directional movement). Best for commercial facilities where forensic analytics and audit trails are required.
Luma AI: Object detection integrated with Control4 events. Motion triggers can drive Control4 scenes, lighting changes, and notifications through the native driver. Best for residential projects where smart home integration is the primary use case for analytics.
Verkada’s AI platform is the most sophisticated of the three. Person re-identification. the ability to follow a specific individual across multiple cameras in a facility by appearance rather than identity. is not available in UniFi Protect or Luma at this time. For a corporate office or a mixed-use facility where understanding movement patterns and investigating incidents forensically matters, Verkada’s AI justifies part of its SaaS premium. UniFi Protect’s 2026 AI updates moved the platform forward meaningfully. License plate recognition is now functional on the UniFi Protect NVR with compatible cameras. AI Smart Detection. which filters motion events to show only person, vehicle, or package events. has matured to the point where false-alert rates are low enough for real-world use. The critical distinction is that all of this runs locally. The AI inference happens on the NVR hardware. No video leaves the property for analysis. Audit Logs and Access Controls
Verkada has the strongest audit and access control story of the three platforms. Every user action. who viewed a clip, who exported footage, who granted access to another user. is logged with a timestamp and user identity. Role-based access control allows a security director to grant an investigator access to a specific camera for a specific time window without giving them access to the full system. This is enterprise-grade access management, and it is appropriate for commercial environments where chain of custody for footage matters legally.
UniFi Protect has user roles and basic audit logging, but the access control granularity is less detailed. Luma’s access controls are adequate for residential use but are not designed for multi-tenant commercial environments. For a law firm, a financial services office, or a multi-family property management company, Verkada’s access controls are a meaningful differentiator. For a single-family estate in Alpine or Saddle River, they are architectural overhead that does not add value.
Integration with Control Systems
UniFi Protect integrates with Crestron through available drivers that surface camera feeds and motion events on Crestron control interfaces. The integration is functional but requires programming effort. Luma’s Control4 integration is native and bidirectional. Camera feeds appear in the Control4 interface without workarounds, and motion events from Luma cameras can trigger Control4 programming events. turning on lights, sending notifications, unlocking a door via access control. Verkada integrates with enterprise access control systems. Lenel, Genetec, Software House. rather than residential control platforms. For commercial deployments where Verkada cameras need to correlate with badge access events, that enterprise ecosystem integration is valuable. For a residential Crestron home, Verkada is not the natural fit.
