The electrician and the AV integrator are separate trades with separate scopes. On most construction projects, they rarely talk to each other directly. The builder coordinates both, the schedules are set independently, and everyone assumes the other party knows what they need. That assumption is where coordination failures begin, and they show up as problems during final installation that should have been solved during rough-in.
The relationship between these two trades matters more on a high-performance smart home than on almost any other project type. The decisions the electrician makes at rough-in directly affect what the integrator can do at installation.

A properly specified AV and automation system requires dedicated electrical circuits. The equipment rack for a whole-home system typically draws 15 to 30 amps under normal load, depending on the amplifier complement. Sharing those circuits with other loads. lighting, appliances, HVAC equipment. introduces noise into the power supply that can manifest as hum in audio systems, instability in control processors, and premature component failure. We specify a minimum of two dedicated 20-amp circuits for the main equipment room, on separate legs of the panel to balance load. High-performance audio applications get their own dedicated circuits, isolated from the rest of the system. These circuit designations need to be on the electrical plan before rough-in, which means the integrator’s power requirements need to reach the electrician before rough-in begins. On most projects, that conversation never happens.
Outlets Behind Every Display
Every television location in the house requires a power outlet inside the wall, behind where the display will be mounted. This sounds obvious, but we walk projects regularly where the flat-screen is mounted, the integrator is installing the bracket, and there is no outlet within reach without a visible surface-mounted extension. The electrician finished their scope. The AV integrator was not yet engaged. The outlet was not on the plan.
A recessed outlet box, properly sized and positioned at the center-height of the intended display, is a five-minute task during rough-in. Adding one to a finished wall is a half-day repair project that involves drywall, painting, and the inevitable argument about who is responsible for the cost.
Switched vs. Unswitched Outlets
Automation systems control power to certain devices differently depending on the application. A television should remain on an unswitched circuit. always-hot. because the automation system controls its on/off state directly. A floor lamp controlled by the lighting system should be on a switched circuit, with the Lutron or Crestron dimmer controlling the load. Mixing these up produces systems where the automation cannot control what it should, or where devices lose power unexpectedly because the outlet is switching when it shouldn’t.
The integrator needs to communicate which outlets should be switched and which should be unswitched as part of the rough-in package. This requires a scope of work document that the electrician actually receives and reviews before rough-in, not after.
Common Coordination Failures
The most common failure is simply the sequence: builder hires the electrician, electrician does rough-in on the standard plan, integrator arrives for installation and discovers that the required circuits, outlets, and dedicated runs are not where they need to be. Every correction at that point costs more than it would have at rough-in, and some corrections are not possible without reopening finished walls.
A close second is the keypad and control device location conflict. Lutron and Crestron keypads require a low-voltage wiring pathway, but they are often positioned adjacent to standard light switches that the electrician rough-in for a hot box with a neutral. Getting both in the same wall location, at the correct mounting height, without conflicting rough-in boxes, requires a coordinated plan that both trades have reviewed. This coordination challenge is part of why conduit planning needs to happen before any rough-in begins.
