Conduit is one of those things that nobody thinks about until it’s too late. By the time a homeowner is asking why their AV installer can’t run a clean cable from the rack to the third floor, the walls are closed, the finish work is done, and the options have narrowed to exposed surface raceway or a significant retrofit. Neither is what anyone wanted.

Conduit does three things that matter for a high-performance AV and automation system. First, it protects cables from physical damage, moisture, and in outdoor runs, UV degradation. Second, it keeps low-voltage wiring code-compliant in locations that require separation from high-voltage wiring or exterior exposure. Third, and most valuable over the life of the home, it creates a pathway for future cable pulls.
That last point is the one most builders overlook. Technology changes. The fiber optic cable that wasn’t in the scope when the house was built will be in the scope during the next system upgrade. The 10-gigabit network run that wasn’t spec’d in 2024 will be relevant in 2028. Without conduit, adding that cable means opening walls. With conduit, it means pulling a new cable through an existing pathway. The labor cost difference is significant. In a finished custom home, it’s often prohibitive. and it’s a core reason why skipping infrastructure early costs far more later.
Where Conduit Should Run
At minimum, we recommend conduit from the rack room to the attic on every floor, and from the rack room to each floor’s distribution point. Outdoor runs to the pool area, pool house, detached garage, gate, and any exterior speaker or camera locations all require conduit. both for protection and for NEC compliance on exterior low-voltage runs in most jurisdictions.
In homes with significant media room or home theater builds, we spec conduit runs between the equipment location and the projection wall, and from the ceiling to any in-wall speaker locations that might require speaker upgrades. HDMI and fiber HDMI cable changes are common enough over a system’s lifetime that having a pull path already in place is worth the framing-stage investment.
What Happens When It’s Missing
The scenario we encounter most often is a home where conduit was never discussed, the framing went up, rough-in happened without any input from the AV integrator, and now we’re being asked to get cables from the basement rack room to second and third floor locations cleanly. In some homes, the attic is accessible and we can make it work with minimal disruption. In others, the construction method makes cable fishing genuinely destructive.
Insulated concrete form construction, steel framing, and certain engineered lumber systems create drilling challenges that don’t exist in standard wood frame. Fire blocking between floors, which is required by code in most jurisdictions, creates additional obstacles that conduit already installed at framing would have bypassed completely. Bring your AV integrator into the project before framing, provide them the floor plans, and ask for a conduit plan. The cost to install empty conduit during framing is a fraction of what it costs to work around missing conduit after the walls close.
