What is the difference between RoseWater Energy and a standard UPS?
RoseWater Energy is a whole-home power management platform that combines a large LFP battery (typically 28.8 kWh on the HUB20), a 20 kVA online double-conversion inverter, and integration with solar and generator. A standard rack UPS protects a specific load like a rack of AV gear for 30-90 minutes. RoseWater is house-scale and runs the whole electrical service through it. Both have a place. RoseWater for whole-home clean backup; rack UPS for surgical protection of mission-critical electronics.
What is SurgeX and why is it different from a regular surge protector?
SurgeX uses Advanced Series Mode protection, which is non-sacrificial and does not use MOVs (metal oxide varistors). MOV-based protectors degrade with every surge they absorb and eventually stop working without warning. SurgeX absorbs surges into a series-mode inductor-capacitor circuit that does not wear out, will not let through more than 6,000V even on a worst-case strike, and continues to perform identically over decades. We use SurgeX on every luxury rack we build.
What battery chemistry is best for home backup: SLA or LFP?
LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate, also written LiFePO4) is the right answer for almost every new install. It lasts 7-10 years versus 3-5 years for sealed lead-acid (SLA), tolerates heat better, weighs roughly one-third as much per kWh, and supports thousands of deeper discharge cycles. SLA is still cheaper up front and is fine for short-runtime applications, but on a total-cost-of-ownership basis LFP wins. Most modern rack UPS units now ship with LFP options. Whole-home systems like RoseWater are LFP-only.
What are the three tiers of home power protection?
Tier 1 is panel-level: whole-home surge protection at the main panel, plus voltage regulation if the utility is dirty. Local UPS vs. whole-home power management - how do I choose?
This is the practical decision most owners are actually trying to make. Standard luxury home in the $2M-$5M range with an AV/IT rack to protect: Tier 1 (whole-home surge at panel) plus Tier 2 (rack UPS plus SurgeX). End of a long utility feeder with frequent brownouts: same Tier 1 plus Tier 2, with online double-conversion UPS at the rack and a voltage regulator at the panel. Owner has explicitly decided power events are unacceptable AND budget supports it: add Tier 3 (RoseWater whole-home). New build $10M+ with owner who wants consistent: Tier 3 RoseWater designed at framing, plus rack UPS for the most sensitive AV. Retrofit on a finished home with modest budget: Tier 1 plus Tier 2 only - Tier 3 retrofits are expensive and disruptive. Modest single-rack home with a generator already installed: Tier 2 alone (rack UPS plus SurgeX), add Tier 1 surge at panel for $400-$1,000. Local rack UPS without whole-home protection leaves the rest of the house exposed; whole-home without rack UPS still works fine but pairing them gives you a second isolation layer for the most sensitive gear.
Who should NOT buy RoseWater?
Most luxury homes. The honest math: RoseWater is $80K-$200K to protect against events that, for most properties, happen a few times a year and last under an hour. A properly specced rack UPS plus a generator handles 99 percent of those events for under $20K total. RoseWater is the right answer for a narrow band: $10M+ homes where six figures on power is a rounding error, houses with substantial wellness/refrigeration/food infrastructure where a 30-second blink costs five figures, properties at the end of a feeder where the grid is genuinely bad, and owners who have explicitly said they never want to see a flicker. If none of those four conditions apply, the money is better spent on a larger generator, better rack UPS with LFP, and SurgeX everywhere. RoseWater is not aspirational. It is situational.
Tell me about the RoseWater HUB20 and SB20.
The HUB20 is a 20 kVA online double-conversion inverter paired with a 28.8 kWh LFP battery. The SB20 is the smaller-footprint variant. The system sits between the utility service and the home's main panel: every electron in the house passes through the inverter, which means the house always sees a perfect 120/240V sine wave regardless of what the utility is doing. Zero transfer time when the grid drops. Continuous power conditioning. Solar and generator integration. Whole-home scope. The tradeoff is cost - a RoseWater install is well into six figures - and the requirement for real electrical work and a dedicated mechanical room.
When is RoseWater the right answer?
New construction or substantial renovation on a $5M+ home where the owner has decided that power events are not acceptable. Houses with substantial AV, automation, wellness, and food-storage infrastructure (wine rooms, large refrigeration, induction kitchens). Properties on the end of a long utility feeder where the grid is known to be unreliable. Where solar and a standby generator are already in scope and the owner wants them coordinated into one reliable stack.
What SurgeX models do you typically deploy?
SX-1115-RT and SX-1120-RT for rack-mount Advanced Series Mode protection at 15A and 20A respectively - these are the workhorses of the rack tier. The XR-315 for panel-adjacent whole-home protection at the service entrance. We pair the rack SurgeX with an upstream UPS for runtime; the SurgeX provides the conditioning and surge protection, the UPS provides the battery backup.
APC has so many product lines. Which ones are actually rack-grade?
Smart-UPS SRT is the rack-grade line - online double-conversion, true sine wave, available in LFP. We deploy SRT 2200 and SRT 3000 most often. Smart-UPS SMT is line-interactive with true sine wave and is fine for secondary racks and larger desk loads. Back-UPS at the bottom of the line is consumer-grade with stepped-approximation sine wave - fine for individual desk PCs only, never for racks or sensitive AV. NetShelter is APC's rack enclosure line, not a UPS - it is the cabinet.
What about Eaton and Tripp Lite?
Eaton (5P, 9PX, 9SX) and Tripp Lite (now part of Eaton, SmartOnline series) are the credible alternates to APC at the rack tier. The Eaton 9PX and Tripp Lite SmartOnline 1500-3000 VA are direct competitors to APC Smart-UPS SRT - online double-conversion, true sine wave, available in LFP. We have deployed both. Engineering is comparable across the three brands at this tier; the choice is usually driven by what the local distributor stocks, what is on a maintenance contract, and what fits the rack space.
What about Vertiv (Liebert)?
Vertiv leans more enterprise/data-center than residential, but the residential line (Liebert PSI5 and GXT) is a fit for very large home racks where 5kVA+ is needed. We will spec Vertiv on big commercial-style residential systems where the load and runtime requirements are above what the APC/Eaton/Tripp Lite residential lines comfortably handle.
What is the difference between SLA and LFP in real-world terms?
Three differences that matter. Lifespan: SLA dies in 3-5 years; LFP lasts 7-10. Weight: a 5 kVA SLA UPS battery pack weighs 200+ pounds; the same capacity in LFP is 60-80 pounds. Heat tolerance: SLA loses roughly half its life for every 18F above 77F; LFP degrades more gracefully. Up-front cost is higher for LFP, but on a total-cost-of-ownership basis LFP wins on virtually every deployment we do today.
Why do MOV-based surge protectors fail silently?
MOVs (metal oxide varistors) work by clamping voltage spikes and dumping the energy to ground. Each clamp event degrades the MOV slightly. Over time, with enough events, the MOV fails open - meaning the protector still passes power but no longer provides protection, and there is no light or alarm telling the user. The protector becomes a regular power strip. SurgeX Advanced Series Mode is non-sacrificial - it does not use MOVs and does not degrade with use, so the protection remains identical year after year.
How do I size a UPS correctly?
Three numbers: load (watts and VA), runtime requirement, and inrush tolerance. Pick a UPS rated for at least 1.3x your steady-state load to handle inrush and headroom. For runtime, calculate the actual minutes you need at full load - not the optimistic vendor number at 50 percent load. Underestimating either is the most common reason a UPS fails the moment it is needed. A typical luxury home AV/IT rack draws 800-1,500W steady-state, so a 2200-3000 VA UPS with extended runtime is the common spec.
Can you pair RoseWater with a rack UPS?
Yes, and in some installs we do. RoseWater handles the whole-home conditioning and reliable backup. A small rack UPS still provides isolation, sequenced power, and a second layer of conditioning specifically for the most sensitive AV/IT gear. For most RoseWater installs the whole-home protection is enough; on installs where the rack is exceptionally sensitive or where rack-level monitoring is wanted, the small rack UPS plus SurgeX layer is added downstream.
What does a real luxury home power stack actually look like?
A representative stack on a $4M-$8M new build: at the meter / panel - whole-home SurgeX (XR-315), voltage regulator if needed, standby generator (Generac, Kohler, 22-48 kW), automatic transfer switch. At the AV / IT rack - APC Smart-UPS SRT 2200 or 3000 with LFP (60-90 min runtime), SurgeX SX-1115-RT or SX-1120-RT, sequenced rack PDU (Furman or equivalent). At critical sub-panels - smaller Smart-UPS or Eaton 9SX on network closets, security panel, automation processor cabinet. Monitoring everything via Ethernet/SNMP into the automation system. For Tier 3, add RoseWater HUB20 between utility and main panel.
How does this stack handle a brownout?
Brownouts are the harder case than full outages, because the gear sees undervoltage but not zero. The whole-home unit at the panel does not switch to backup - it just sees low voltage. The line-interactive UPS at the rack might or might not kick to battery depending on its threshold. The online double-conversion UPS at the rack ALWAYS sees clean voltage at the load because it is regenerating the waveform from DC. RoseWater at the whole-home tier does the same thing for every circuit. This is why we recommend online topology for rack UPS in any home where brownouts are a known issue, and why we recommend RoseWater for the highest tier.
Where does the battery system sit physically in the house?
Rack UPS lives in the AV/IT rack itself, typically in the basement, mechanical room, or dedicated rack closet. Whole-home batteries (RoseWater, Powerwall, Enphase) live in a dedicated mechanical space, garage, or basement, with thermal and ventilation requirements that have to be designed in - typically 200-400 sq ft for a RoseWater HUB20 with proper ventilation. We design the mechanical room at framing on new construction; on retrofits we work with the homeowner and electrician to find a suitable space.
What does ongoing maintenance look like?
Rack UPS: monthly self-test (most run automatically), annual full battery rundown test, battery replacement at end-of-life by chemistry (3-5 years SLA, 7-10 years LFP). SurgeX: annual review against published specs (units are non-sacrificial so no replacement is required unless physical damage occurs). RoseWater: vendor-coordinated annual inspection plus continuous remote monitoring. Whole-home surge: replace MOV-based units every 5-7 years or after a known major event. We put all of this on a maintenance plan so the homeowner does not have to think about it.
Is this stuff overkill for a normal house?
Define normal. For a $400K suburban tract home with a single TV and a router, no - a $40 surge strip and a small Back-UPS on the modem is enough. For a luxury home with whole-home Crestron, distributed audio, theaters, wellness systems, refrigeration that costs five figures to restock, smart shades, automation processors, and network gear that runs the house - the stack we spec is not overkill, it is appropriate to the value of what it is protecting. The biggest mistake we see is treating power as the cheapest line item on a project where every other line item got careful spec.
