Pre-Wire Standard

Pre-Hardscape Conduit Standard

The Restrepo standard for conduit placement before hardscape installation. Covers burial depth by conduit type, stub-up position requirements, fill and seal specifications, and the trade sign-off process before concrete and stone are placed.

What This Standard Covers

  • Burial depth requirements by conduit type: PVC, HDPE, rigid metallic, and direct-burial
  • Stub-up position tolerances relative to hardscape features, furniture, and landscape elements
  • Conduit fill limit compliance for runs that will be inaccessible after hardscape
  • End cap and pull string requirements for all conduit before concrete is placed
  • Inspection checklist for GC sign-off before hardscape contractor mobilizes
  • Remediation options when stub-up positions deviate from the approved plan

Who It Is For

  • Landscape and hardscape contractors coordinating with low-voltage trades before stone or concrete
  • General contractors managing the sequencing of outdoor conduit and hardscape installation
  • AV integrators verifying conduit placements before the hardscape window closes
  • Architects and landscape architects confirming conduit positions in hardscape drawings

When To Use It

  • Before any concrete is poured or stone base course is placed over outdoor conduit runs
  • At the landscape pre-construction meeting to confirm conduit routing and stub-up positions
  • After excavation is complete but before backfill to verify depth and routing
  • Before the hardscape contractor mobilizes for final base installation

Field Notes

Hardscape is one of the most costly things to cut and patch on a residential property. A conduit stub-up in the wrong position, or a missing conduit for a future outdoor zone, means breaking stone or concrete. This standard defines the verification steps that prevent that.

The challenge is coordination timing. The landscape contractor may be working on a compressed schedule, and the AV rough-in has to happen within a specific window. This document gives both trades a clear checklist so the handoff is clean and the hardscape can proceed without delay.
