A generator is a major investment, and on the day it matters, the value of the install is measured by what the property actually does when the utility drops. A clean transfer, a known set of loads that ride through, a known set that sheds, and a clean return when the grid comes back. That logic does not live in the generator. What the AV and Automation System Needs to Know
When the grid drops and the generator picks up, the AV and automation system needs to know it. Some loads should ride through with no behavior change. Some loads should drop temporarily to preserve generator capacity. Some scenes should change to reflect the situation, for example a clubhouse moving from full house lighting to a hold pattern that preserves egress and operational lighting while the kitchen pulls more of the generator budget. When the utility returns, the system should return the property to its pre-event state cleanly, not pop every load on at the same instant.

Most generators in our footprint are not sized to carry the entire property at full load. They are sized to carry the essentials with margin. The AV and automation system can help by shedding non-essential loads when the generator picks up. The pool equipment can pause. The outdoor entertainment system can drop. The unused-wing HVAC can throttle. The control system handles this through the same scenes and schedules that run the rest of the property, which means the logic is documented in one place and visible from one screen.
This is also where EV charging coordination matters. A single Level 2 charger is a meaningful share of a typical home generator budget. The control system can pause charging during generator operation, resume on grid return, and notify the owner. Solar and battery integration follows the same pattern. The control system reads the inverter status and reflects it on the same touchpanel as the rest of the property.
Coordination With the Electrician and Generator Vendor
Restrepo does not install the generator. We work with the electrician on record and the generator vendor on record, and we coordinate the control logic that wraps around their work. The transfer switch tells the control processor that the property is on generator. The processor adjusts the scenes and the schedules accordingly. When the utility returns and the transfer switch hands back, the processor restores the pre-event state. This requires three trades agreeing on the spec in writing before the install. We bring that document and the conversation.

The transfer state, the load-shed scenes, and the post-event return all need to live where the rest of the property logic lives. Putting the generator coordination on the same Crestron processor as the lighting, audio, displays, and shades means one screen, one support relationship, and one place where the logic is documented.
