Getting it right requires resolving those competing demands in the design phase, not on installation day.

Each of the four front-door systems has a specific coverage zone, and those zones need to be designed together. A common failure is placing all four devices in a vertical stack at the door with no consideration for what each one actually needs to see.
The surveillance camera should be positioned to capture the approach path: the walkway, porch, or drive apron between the public way and the door threshold. The ideal mount height is 8 to 10 feet, with the lens angled to cover 15 to 20 feet of approach. This gives the homeowner and the automation system advance notice of who is approaching before they reach the intercom. A wide-angle lens at this height captures the full width of the entry path without creating a fisheye distortion that makes identification difficult.
The intercom station mounts at a height that places the camera lens at approximately face height for a standing adult. typically 55 to 60 inches to the center of the lens. This is where visitor identification happens at close range. Mounting the intercom higher for aesthetic reasons raises the camera above the visitor’s face and captures forehead and ceiling instead of face. We see this error on renovation projects where the intercom was positioned to look symmetrical on the pilaster rather than to see the visitor’s face.
The doorbell button is a separate call-trigger device, positioned at a height and location that is immediately obvious to a visitor who has never been to the property before. Many intercoms combine the button and camera in a single unit. When they are separate, the button should be within 12 inches of the intercom station horizontally so a visitor understands the relationship between pressing the button and speaking to the camera.
The lock trim mounts at standard door hardware height. 36 inches to handle center. and its keypad or reader should not block the intercom camera’s view of a visitor’s face. Resolve the hardware layout before door fabrication.
Wiring Rough-In: PoE, Low-Voltage, and the Mortise Prep
The rough-in window is the only time this work is simple. Once walls are closed and finished surfaces are in place, adding or correcting conduit runs through a luxury residence involves millwork removal, paint and plaster repair, and days of disruption per run. This is the argument for getting the rough-in specification exactly right during the framing phase.
The surveillance camera requires a Cat6 home run from the camera position to the IDF or MDF. The camera should be on a PoE port from a managed switch. not a consumer PoE injector. so that power can be monitored and cycled remotely and the camera participates in the property’s managed network infrastructure. Conduit should be installed even in finished areas because future camera technology changes will require cable replacement.
The intercom station requires the same: a Cat6 home run on PoE for power and SIP communication. If the intercom is a 2N IP unit, a single Cat6 handles everything. Some intercom configurations also require a separate 12V or 24V strike wiring run for the door lock release, which is separate from the data cable. The electric strike or magnetic lock controlling the door requires a dedicated low-voltage power run from the access control panel, typically 18/2 or 18/4 shielded wire in conduit. The access control panel location should be planned relative to the door location. a panel on the opposite side of the residence from the front entry creates long wire runs that need to be in conduit through finished ceilings.
The mortise lock prep is the most time-sensitive coordination item. If the door design includes a mortise lock. the standard for luxury residential and any door requiring a deadbolt, handle, and credential reader in a single unified piece of hardware. the door manufacturer needs the exact lock model before the door is built. Mortise pockets are cut into the door edge at the factory. Attempting to cut a mortise pocket in a finished door in the field is destructive and produces a compromised result. The hardware selection and the door specification must be coordinated, not sequential.
Aesthetic Coordination: Hardware Finishes
A luxury entry door is an architectural feature. The technology at that door should reinforce the architecture, not contradict it. This requires a single finish specification across all hardware touchpoints: intercom faceplate, doorbell button housing, lock trim, hinges, and any outdoor lighting fixtures on the entry surround.

The architect and hardware specifier should see technology selections alongside door hardware selections, not after the fact. Technology added to a door after architectural hardware has been ordered typically results in finish mismatches visible from the street.
Network Integration: How the Four Systems Talk
Each of the four front-door systems connects to the home’s managed network and communicates with the automation controller. Crestron, in our typical residential configuration. The integration is event-driven: when the doorbell is pressed, the intercom sends a ring event to Crestron. Crestron displays the intercom camera feed on the master suite touchpanel, plays a chime through the distributed audio system at a configurable volume, and presents a door-release button on the touchpanel. The homeowner presses the release button on the panel, Crestron signals the access controller, and the controller opens the strike or unlocks the lock. The surveillance camera streams to the NVR via RTSP and simultaneously provides a live feed to the Crestron touchpanel at the entry event.
