Google Assistant for Crestron: Honest Review

Google Assistant is the third major consumer voice path on Crestron projects. Less common in our portfolio than Alexa, but the right call for households already invested in Google services. The natural language understanding is genuinely the best of the three big cloud assistants for free-form phrasing.

What Google Assistant Is Good At

Natural language flexibility. Google’s NLP handles loose phrasing better than Alexa or Siri. “Hey Google, can you bring the dining room down a little for dinner” is more likely to resolve correctly on Google than on the other cloud assistants. For households that want voice to feel conversational rather than command-structured, Google has the edge.

Existing Google ecosystem use. Households already using Pixel phones, Nest cameras, Nest thermostats, Nest doorbells, and Nest Hub displays get strong layering. Google Assistant ties those devices into the same voice fabric as the Crestron scenes. The Nest Hub Max in a kitchen doubles as a video doorbell viewer, a music endpoint, and a Crestron scene trigger.

Nest hardware quality. The Nest thermostat is genuinely well-built. Nest cameras are competitive with Arlo and Ring. Nest Audio sounds noticeably better than Echo at the same price point. For households who care about audio quality from the assistant speaker itself, Google has an advantage.

What Google Assistant Is Bad At

Cloud dependency, same as Alexa. Every command routes through Google’s servers for interpretation. Internet outage means voice outage. Google service degradation events (less frequent than Amazon’s but they happen) slow or stop voice. The Crestron processor keeps running locally.

Long-term roadmap. Google has changed direction on Google Home and Nest several times over the last decade. Works with Nest got rolled into Works with Google Assistant. Nest products got rebranded and re-architected. Some older Nest devices stopped working with the new platform. Households investing in Google for a 10-year horizon should plan for some replatforming work along the way.

Privacy. Google is in the data flow. Voice recordings are retained by default, with controls in the Google account settings to disable retention or auto-delete older recordings. We recommend clients turn on auto-delete as part of setup. Honest framing: Google Assistant is convenient and inexpensive, but Google is in the data flow and they are not selling the speakers at a profit.

Crestron integration scope. The Google Home skill for Crestron exposes scenes and devices similarly to Alexa, but the ecosystem of third-party Google Home integrations is narrower than Alexa’s. For a Crestron house that wants the voice layer to also reach a few one-off non-Crestron devices, Alexa often has broader reach.

What Google Assistant Connects To on Crestron

Crestron exposes scenes, lighting, shading, climate, and audio to Google Home as standard smart-home accessories. The Google Home app becomes a visual control surface. Google Assistant on any Nest device, Pixel phone, Pixel Watch, Pixel Tablet, or Chromebook becomes a voice trigger.

Beyond Crestron, Google Home connects to: Nest thermostats and cameras and doorbells, Philips Hue, Lutron, August, Schlage, Ecobee, Sonos, Roku, Chromecast, and most Matter-certified devices. The Matter rollout has helped close some of the gap with Alexa, and Google has invested in Matter support more aggressively than Apple did initially.

Cost to Run

Hardware: Nest Mini around $50, Nest Audio around $100, Nest Hub (2nd gen) around $100, Nest Hub Max around $230. A typical luxury home places three to ten Nest devices.

Programming: Crestron-to-Google integration is part of standard commissioning on recent processor projects. For older programs, the Google Home skill setup takes one service visit.

Subscription: none for voice control. Nest Aware (camera storage) is optional at $8 to $15 per month if cameras are in scope. YouTube Music Premium is optional and unrelated to voice control. No fees for Google Assistant operating Crestron.

Lifetime cost: Nest hardware lasts five to seven years in our experience. Refresh cost is similar to Echo at $400 to $1,500 per cycle. Some older Nest devices have been dropped from the platform during reorganizations, so plan for some hardware turnover beyond pure end-of-life.

When We Specify Google Assistant

If the household uses Pixel phones, Nest cameras and thermostats, and is already comfortable in the Google ecosystem, Google Assistant is the right voice path. The natural language flexibility is the best of the three cloud options. The Nest hardware is solid.
