Or they mean an older demo from a trade show that never made it into real homes. In a real Crestron house, the voice front end is the client’s pick. Crestron is the executor.
That framing matters because it changes the question. The right question is not “which voice should I buy.” The right question is “which microphone do I want listening in my home, and what tradeoffs am I willing to take to use it.”
Option 1: Amazon Alexa
Alexa is the most common voice trigger we see on Crestron systems. Clients usually already own Echo devices before the Crestron project starts. The integration is mature. The hardware is inexpensive. The wake word and command flow is familiar to most households.
The good: low cost, wide hardware selection, broad family of Alexa-compatible peripherals, well-documented Crestron integration. The bad: cloud-dependent NLP, Amazon is in the data flow, voice control stops when the internet drops or Amazon services degrade. The microphone array on Echo hardware is decent but not engineered for whole-room pickup the way a ceiling-mounted Josh AI Nano is.

Option 2: Apple HomeKit and Siri
HomeKit is the Apple ecosystem version of the same idea. Crestron exposes scenes and devices to HomeKit. Siri on an iPhone, iPad, HomePod, or Apple Watch becomes the trigger. For households that already live in iCloud and use iPhones for everything else, HomeKit is the most coherent fit.
The good: stronger privacy posture than Alexa or Google, on-device processing for many Siri requests on newer devices, deep integration with iPhone and Apple Watch as voice points. The bad: HomeKit ecosystem is smaller and less flexible than Alexa, some Crestron exposures require a third-party bridge or driver, Siri natural language is improving but still less forgiving than Google Assistant.

Households already invested in Google services (Nest cameras and thermostats, Google Home speakers, Pixel phones) get the most use here.
The good: Google’s NLP is genuinely strong on natural phrasing, broad device support, Nest hardware is well-built. The bad: cloud dependency, Google is in the data flow, the long-term roadmap for Google Home as a platform has been less consistent than Amazon’s.

Home Assistant is the open-source path. It runs on a small server in the home (a Home Assistant Yellow, a Raspberry Pi, or a generic mini PC). The voice engine is local. Whisper handles speech-to-text. Piper handles text-to-speech. The Crestron integration runs through MQTT or a Home Assistant Crestron component.
This is the real privacy answer. No cloud round-trip. No third-party hearing the audio. The wake word, the recognition, and the command dispatch all happen inside the house. The good: full local processing, no subscription, no cloud dependency, transparent code base. The bad: requires more setup and ongoing maintenance than a consumer platform, the natural language flexibility lags Google and Apple, the hardware story for room-by-room microphones is less polished. Option 5: Josh AI
Josh AI is the integrator-channel voice product. The hardware is purpose-built for luxury homes. The Nano and Micro form factors are designed to mount cleanly in ceilings and walls. The natural language flexibility is real. The mobile app is polished. For clients who want a dedicated voice product that was engineered for whole-home pickup and integrator deployment, Josh AI is the most coherent option in the consumer-adjacent market.
Restrepo Innovations does not specify Josh AI on new builds. Two reasons. First, cost. Josh AI hardware runs in the thousands of dollars per home for full coverage, plus a subscription. Whether the command is “movie night” spoken to an Amazon Echo or “hey Josh, set up movie night” spoken to a Josh microphone, the macro that runs at the Crestron processor is the same macro. Paying recurring fees for a more articulate way to say “movie night” does not earn its keep on most projects.
Second, privacy. Josh AI markets itself as the private alternative to Alexa and Google. The marketing language is careful. In practice, voice commands still travel to a cloud NLP service for interpretation. “We do not sell your data” is a different claim than “your voice is processed locally,” and the two get conflated in sales conversations. If privacy is the real driver, Home Assistant with Whisper and Piper is the honest path.
