The outdoor living environment presents a different set of engineering problems than the interior. Temperature cycling from -20°F to 100°F. Direct UV exposure. Moisture infiltration through condensation cycles over decades. Wildlife interference with cabling. All of these are real failure modes in outdoor technology installations, and most of them are caused by specifying products that were not designed for the outdoor environment. Coastal Source builds products that are.

The Integrated Approach

Coastal Source is one of the few manufacturers in the residential market that designs outdoor audio and low-voltage landscape lighting as an integrated system. The practical advantage is infrastructure consolidation: a single low-voltage wiring run can carry both audio and lighting signals, reducing trenching requirements, simplifying the junction box layout, and producing a finished installation with less visible hardware than a system assembled from separate audio and lighting components. For a real-world example of how this plays out in a complete installation, see our project post on the outdoor entertainment system at a Morris County pool house.

For a landscape installation in a finished yard where minimizing disruption to plantings and hardscape is a priority, that consolidation is genuinely valuable. Instead of two separate trench runs. one for audio cable, one for landscape lighting low-voltage wire. the Coastal Source system typically requires one.

The Bullet Speaker

Coastal Source’s Bullet speaker is a small-format directional speaker mounted on a stake that integrates into landscape plantings. At typical garden heights, the speaker is at or below the sight line of anyone standing in the space, positioned to project audio at ear level when seated rather than radiating from ceiling or wall surfaces. The result is outdoor audio that does not require a visible above-ground speaker cabinet and does not broadcast to adjacent properties the way a pole-mounted speaker would.

The Bullet speaker’s IP68 rating means it is fully submersible, which is a more demanding specification than the IP65 or IP67 ratings on most competing outdoor speakers. In a landscape where sprinkler systems operate in close proximity and seasonal flooding is possible in low-lying areas, that distinction matters over a system’s service life.

“Coastal Source changes the outdoor audio conversation from ‘where do we put the speakers’ to ‘where does the client want to hear music.’ That is a better conversation, and it produces better installations.” __EMDASH_PROTECT_0__

Landscape Lighting Integration

Coastal Source’s landscape lighting line uses LED fixtures with high CRI ratings (90+) designed for the color rendering requirements of mature landscape lighting. the warm-white rendering that makes a Japanese maple or ornamental grass look as it does in daylight rather than the blue-shifted rendering that standard landscape lighting produces. The fixtures are designed for direct burial or surface mounting, with corrosion-resistant housings that maintain their appearance through seasonal exposure cycles.

Integration with the Crestron and Lutron control ecosystems allows outdoor lighting scenes to be part of the same whole-home automation logic as interior lighting. A “sunset” scene that transitions interior lighting to warm levels as the day ends can simultaneously bring up the landscape lighting on a schedule that follows the actual sunset time rather than a fixed clock setting. This integration between outdoor and indoor control is the kind of experience we describe in our post on what clean actually means in a smart home.

Why It Matters on the Right Project

Coastal Source is not the right specification for every outdoor installation. For clients with moderate outdoor living spaces or limited landscape complexity, Origin Acoustics bollard speakers or a standard IP-rated in-ground speaker approach may be more appropriate. For estate-scale outdoor installations with extensive landscape design, multiple entertaining zones, and the expectation of multi-decade reliability, Coastal Source’s integrated approach and engineering quality are the correct solution. For waterfront properties specifically, see our post on outdoor technology for a waterfront estate.

The outdoor technology specification is part of every whole-property system design conversation we have. Visit our Partners page for the full context on how Coastal Source fits alongside our other outdoor and indoor technology partners.
