It is invisible until a future upgrade or failure exposes it, at which point walls, ceilings, and millwork must be opened. Of everything that goes into a high-performance home, smart home infrastructure is the one line item that clients most consistently want to trim. The reasoning is understandable. conduit and wire are not glamorous, they are invisible once the walls are closed, and the savings feel real at the time. The problem is that infrastructure is the only thing you genuinely cannot change later without opening those walls back up.
The devices change. The platforms evolve. What was current three years ago has already been superseded. But the cabling runs behind your drywall, and those decisions are permanent.

Cat5e instead of Cat6A is one of the most common. Cat5e was perfectly adequate for a 1Gbps network and still is, for basic use. But multi-gig switches, Wi-Fi 6E access points, and the coming wave of 10Gbps endpoints all want Cat6A. Running Cat5e in 2026 because it was a few hundred dollars cheaper is borrowing against a future infrastructure project that will cost thousands to remediate. if it can be remediated at all without opening walls.
No conduit is another. In a properly designed installation, flexible conduit is installed in critical runs so that cable can be pulled, replaced, or upgraded without demolition. It adds cost during rough-in and is nearly invisible in the finished product. Without it, every future upgrade requires either living with what is in the wall or paying for drywall work, patching, and painting on top of the labor cost. Undersized equipment spaces create the same problem. A telecom closet or media room that was sized for today’s equipment fills up faster than anyone anticipates. Heat becomes an issue. Ventilation was not designed in. The rack starts to look like a tangle of afterthoughts. Getting more space in that closet after the fact is often structurally impossible.
The Dedicated Circuit Problem
High-performance AV equipment. power amplifiers, large-scale video processors, Crestron control systems. performs better and fails less often on dedicated electrical circuits with proper grounding. Sharing circuits with other loads introduces noise that can manifest as hum in audio, interference in video, and erratic behavior in sensitive control electronics.
Dedicated circuits are inexpensive to install during rough-in electrical and essentially impossible to add without significant disruption afterward. They are the kind of decision that costs $1,500 to make correctly and $15,000 to correct later.

What Proper Infrastructure Actually Costs
Relative to a high-end home’s overall budget, proper infrastructure is not a significant number. On a $3 million project, the difference between doing infrastructure correctly and doing it adequately is often $8,000 to $20,000. That number gets value-engineered out because it does not show up in renderings or finish selections. Five years later, remediating that decision costs multiples of what was saved.
The homes that age well are the ones where someone made the unsexy decisions correctly during construction. Cat6A throughout. Conduit in critical runs. Properly ventilated and sized equipment spaces. Dedicated circuits for AV and lighting. These choices do not require a large budget. they require someone who knows to ask for them at the right time.
The Window Is During Construction
The conversation about infrastructure has to happen before the walls go up. After framing, after rough-in electrical, before drywall. that is the window.
