Why Network Comes First

The single most common reason an Estate Tier home automation system “does not work” is that the network underneath it does not. A control system that loses its processor is a control system that loses control. A streaming subscription on a Wi-Fi access point that does not reach the master suite is a system that buffers. A camera array that drops feeds because of a switch under-provisioned is a system the homeowner stops trusting.

What a Real Home Network Looks Like

  • Structured cabling backbone. Cat6A from every room and access point back to the rack. Fiber backbone between buildings on larger properties. Conduit runs for future expansion.
  • Carrier-grade router/firewall. Ubiquiti UDM Pro, UDM SE, Dream Machine Pro Max, or UXG models depending on scale. Not a consumer router from the ISP.
  • Managed PoE switching. UniFi switches sized to handle every camera, access point, and integration device with headroom.
  • Wi-Fi access points placed by survey. Not by guess. We measure RSSI, SNR, and capacity in actual locations and design coverage to spec.
  • VLAN segmentation. Household, work, guest, IoT, security cameras, and AV gear each on their own segment with firewall rules between them.
  • Remote management and alerting. Remote access, health monitoring, automated alerts, and real-time visibility into who is using what.

Wi-Fi Done Properly

Wi-Fi in a luxury home is the most-used and most-failed system in the house. The two failure modes are the same: too few access points placed badly, and consumer-grade hardware running consumer-grade firmware. We size access points by square footage, construction, and band capacity. and we place them after walking the house. Steel-frame construction, plaster-and-lath walls, and stone fireplaces are all known enemies of Wi-Fi; we solve for them, not around them.

For the largest estates we design redundant uplinks, multiple SSIDs across VLANs, mesh backhaul where wired backhaul is not feasible, and roaming optimized for streaming and voice. The household should not notice the network. that is the goal.

Segmentation Is Not Optional

A correctly segmented network keeps household devices off the same VLAN as a smart fridge. Cameras live on their own segment with no internet egress. Guests get their own SSID with strict isolation. Work-from-home traffic gets QoS priority. IoT devices are firewalled away from the file server. Done correctly, segmentation is invisible. Done incorrectly. or skipped entirely. it is how a $30 IoT plug becomes a foothold on the family laptop.

Monitoring and Service

Once the network is up, we keep it up. Most of our networks are on a service contract that includes remote monitoring, firmware management, port-level visibility, and alerts when something goes wrong. The household typically finds out about a problem from us. and often after we have already fixed it. rather than from the kid who cannot stream upstairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just use the router my ISP gave me?

ISP routers are designed to a price point and a support model that does not match a luxury home. They struggle with VLAN segmentation, lack real firewall granularity, drop connections under load, and do not offer the visibility a real network needs. We replace them with carrier-grade Ubiquiti hardware that we can monitor, support, and expand.

Can you fix my Wi-Fi without replacing the whole network?

Often, yes. Many homes have a usable backbone but bad access point placement or wrong hardware. The walkthrough is the right starting point. Sometimes the answer is two more access points in the right places; sometimes it is a full rebuild. We will tell you which.

What is a VLAN and do I need one?

A VLAN is a logically isolated segment of your network. You need them because IoT devices, cameras, work laptops, household phones, and guests should not share the same broadcast domain. We typically design at least four VLANs for any luxury home and more for properties with significant smart-home or commercial elements.

Can you support work-from-home with serious upload requirements?

Yes. We design networks for households running multiple VPNs, video conferencing, and large file uploads simultaneously. QoS, VLAN priority, dedicated work SSIDs, and dual-WAN failover are all standard tools when the use case calls for them.

What about cellular boost or starlink integration for backup?

Both are common in our larger projects. Dual-WAN failover with a cellular modem or a Starlink terminal as a secondary uplink is a real answer for properties where the primary ISP is not 100 percent reliable. We integrate it cleanly into the firewall so failover happens automatically without anyone touching anything.
