- Low-voltage infrastructure is treated as a specialty scope outside the coordinated set. Rack rooms, conduit paths, and equipment enclosures do not appear on the MEP drawings. Field coordination absorbs what should have been on paper.
- Rack room square footage is set from a nominal figure. Actual equipment inventory, service access, and future capacity are not known. The room ends up too small, or oversized in the wrong direction.
- HVAC heat load calculations do not include the AV equipment room. The rack runs hot, thermal shutdown becomes an owner complaint, and the mechanical engineer is asked to solve a problem the AV firm never disclosed.
- Network infrastructure is scoped as if it were a single closet. Multi-floor pathway coordination, IDF room requirements, and equipment cooling for switches are not spec'd. The IT infrastructure fights the mechanical infrastructure.
- Conduit paths for AV, controls, and low-voltage are added to the drawings after the mechanical and structural coordination is already done. The paths conflict with beams, ducts, and sprinklers. Rework starts.

Pre-Rack Attic-Inclusive Planning and Coordination
Before the rack room square footage is set, we produce a pre-rack coordination package: equipment inventory with cabinet counts, service clearances, expansion capacity, and cable pathways. That package goes to the architect and to the MEP engineer so the room is sized correctly and the pathway coordination starts on paper.
MEP Coordination Sheets
We produce coordination sheets that overlay onto your mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings: conduit paths, cable trays, rack room layouts, and low-voltage device positions. Sheets are sequenced against your revision schedule. When the mechanical or structural design shifts, we revise with the set, not against it.
Equipment Heat Load and Power Specifications
Every AV equipment room has a documented heat load and power spec. Total wattage, sensible heat rejection, redundancy requirements, and UPS runtime targets are provided in writing to the mechanical and electrical engineer. HVAC and panel sizing include the AV load from the first pass, not after the fact.
Network Infrastructure Sizing
Multi-floor network topology: IDF and MDF room requirements, patch panel counts, switch heat rejection, and cabling pathway sizing are worked out with the IT and MEP teams together. Cooling, power, and pathway needs for the network side of the project are documented against the rest of the infrastructure.
Conduit Paths in the Reflected Ceiling Plan
Conduit runs are drawn against your RCP and coordinated with the mechanical and structural systems. In-ceiling device locations, above-ceiling equipment, and pathway conflicts are resolved on paper before rough-in. We attend BIM coordination meetings when the project is set up for them.
Redundancy, UPS, and Backup Specifications
Business-critical systems get documented redundancy specs: UPS runtime, generator load, ATS integration, and switchover behavior. Owner-facing services -- video conferencing, distributed audio, control systems, network -- have documented failure modes and recovery paths. Nothing is left to be discovered at commissioning.

These are real coordination outcomes on commercial and residential projects, presented without client names or addresses.
A Midtown fit-out had a 4,200 SF corporate floor with three conference rooms, a boardroom, an executive suite, and a distributed audio system. We joined the MEP coordination meeting at 65% CDs, produced overlay sheets for the AV conduit and rack power, and revised twice with the set. Commissioning ran without a single RFI on the AV infrastructure.
A Ridgefield estate had a three-floor plus basement network topology, main rack, and two IDF closets. The mechanical engineer had not sized the IDF closets for heat rejection. We provided the heat load spec, the mechanical engineer revised the DX unit selection, and the network closets came online in temperature range at first commissioning.
A commercial retail ownership group had a portfolio-standard rack room design that was undersized for the actual equipment load. We produced a revised rack room layout with correct heat load and power specifications. The mechanical and electrical engineers updated the portfolio template. Two subsequent buildouts opened without rack room heat complaints.
