What is on the rack
The Restrepo Crestron Home stack has four components:
- Crestron Home processor (MC4-R or CP4-R-HS). Runs Crestron Home only. Not SIMPL Windows, not SIMPL#. Hosts the Home Extensions framework where our custom code loads.
- Custom Crestron Home Extensions. Written in-house by Restrepo. Load directly onto the Home processor. The 2x2 Video Wall Extension is the hero example.
- VC-4 (Crestron Virtual Control) on a dedicated local Intel NUC. Runs SIMPL Windows and SIMPL# on x86 hardware. Sits alongside the Home processor. Deployed when scope is compute-heavy or the logic belongs at the program level.
- Home Assistant on the same NUC. A proprietary Crestron SIMPL# bridge written by Restrepo brings any Home Assistant-supported device into Crestron Home as a native-feeling device. Not distributed.
Why we write our own Crestron Home Extensions
One project required a four-display video wall in the main media room. Each display shows an independent source by default. When watching a film, the homeowner wanted all four panels to collapse into a unified 2x2 canvas without pressing a button. The Crestron Home Extensions store had nothing for this. We built the 2x2 Video Wall Extension ourselves. It watches the routing matrix continuously. The moment all four displays switch to the same source, it detects that condition and collapses the panels into a unified 2x2 canvas -- bezels aligned, source filling the full array. When the sources diverge, each display returns to independent mode automatically. That is what in-house Extensions development looks like: a concrete behavior the standard platform cannot produce, solved at the code level and loaded directly onto the Home processor. Why VC-4 runs on a local Intel NUC
Restrepo started running VC-4 in 2020 and 2021 when Crestron appliance processor lead times hit six-plus months. We moved SIMPL Windows and SIMPL# programs onto VC-4 on a dedicated local Intel NUC rather than hold a job. That decision is five-plus years in production and battle-tested. VC-4 runs on the same NUC as Home Assistant -- one extra rack unit, not two. We use VC-4 when the scope demands it: compute-heavy programs, or integrations outside the Extensions layer. If an Extension handles it cleanly, we build an Extension.
The Home Assistant bridge
Crestron Home has no native Home Assistant integration. Restrepo wrote a custom SIMPL# bridge that runs on VC-4 and translates Home Assistant device states and commands into native-feeling Crestron Home events. Home Assistant supports tens of thousands of devices across every major protocol. Any device Home Assistant can reach, the bridge can surface in the Crestron Home UI. The bridge runs entirely in the equipment rack with no cloud dependency. It is proprietary to Restrepo and is not distributed to other dealers. How we pick between an Extension and VC-4
Extensions load onto the Home processor with no added hardware cost. VC-4 is the answer when the scope is compute-heavy or the logic belongs at the SIMPL# program level. We do not add VC-4 to inflate scope. If it works, we keep it. We upgrade what needs upgrading. We do not bill forklift replacements when a bridge will do. FAQ
Does Crestron Home run SIMPL Windows or SIMPL#?
No. Crestron Home processors (MC4-R or CP4-R-HS) run the Crestron Home platform only. SIMPL Windows and SIMPL# belong on VC-4 or on dedicated control appliances. The Home processor does host the Extensions framework, which is a separate API for adding functionality inside Crestron Home -- not SIMPL programming.
Can a Crestron Home Extension control a video wall?
Yes. The 2x2 Video Wall Extension we built in-house watches the routing matrix. When all four displays switch to the same source, it collapses the panels into a unified canvas automatically. When the sources diverge, independent mode resumes. No button press. The same Extension applies to boardrooms and executive suites running Crestron Home.
Why use VC-4 instead of a CP4-N processor?
VC-4 on a local Intel NUC delivers x86 compute headroom without a dedicated appliance processor in the rack. We have run this configuration in production for five-plus years, starting during the appliance supply crunch of 2020 and 2021. The NUC also hosts Home Assistant, so one unit serves both functions. We deploy VC-4 when the project scope genuinely calls for Pro programming at that compute level.
Can Home Assistant talk to Crestron Home directly?
Not natively. Restrepo wrote a custom SIMPL# bridge that runs on VC-4 and connects the local Home Assistant instance to Crestron Home. Any device Home Assistant supports can surface in the Crestron Home UI through the bridge. It runs entirely in the rack, no cloud dependency. This bridge is proprietary to Restrepo and is not distributed.
What happens to my Crestron Home install when something breaks?

Is Crestron Home enough on its own, or do you always need VC-4?

VC-4 adds a NUC and programming time. We do not add VC-4 to bill more hours. We add it when the project genuinely needs Pro programming power beyond what the Extensions layer can deliver.
